Mark Laursen Appointed as New CAATE Residency and Fellowship Director

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) announces that Mark Laursen has been appointed CAATE residency and fellowship director, effective June 13. Mark is currently the director of Athletic Training Services and clinical associate professor of athletic training at Boston University.  

“I could not be more thrilled that Mark has accepted this position,” shared CAATE Executive Director Dale West. “Mark is uniquely qualified for this position and brings extensive knowledge and experience as an athletic trainer educator, clinician and administrator.”

Mark earned a bachelor of science from Appalachian State University and master of science from Canisius College. Prior to rejoining Boston University in 2008, Mark held various athletic training positions at the University of South Carolina, Washington College, and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. 

Mark’s recent publications include, “Socialization Experiences of Athletic Training Preceptors,” featured in the Training Education Journal, and “Starting a Dialogue: Athletic Training Researchers and Clinicians,” from the International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training. 

In addition to his contributions to athletic training publications and as a prolific speaker at national conferences, Mark also served on numerous professional committees and boards, including as president of the CAATE from 2013 to 2015. 

Mark has been an active volunteer in the CAATE for the past three decades and was awarded the CAATE President’s Award in 2021, as well as the CAATE Pete Keohneke Award for Leadership in 2017. Most recently, Mark served as a member of the CAATE Peer Review Committee and vice chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Leadership Development Committee. 

Mark will work with the newly-created Residency and Fellowship Accreditation Council to increase and support athletic training residencies and fellowships.
