Shape the Future of Athletic Training Education

Open-Comment-Graphic2
The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) requests your feedback on the revised draft of the Standards for Accreditation of Professional Athletic Training Programs. This draft includes both the Operational Standards (program logistics) and the Curricular Content (what programs must teach). Both types of Standards are combined in one document that can be viewed HERE. This draft of the Standards incorporates feedback from the Athletic Training Strategic Alliance (Board of Certification, Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the NATA Research & Education Foundation), CAATE physician partners, NATA committees, and the public open comment conducted during Summer 2016. The open comment is now open and will remain open until July 31, 2017.

Your input will help shape the future of athletic training education. Your feedback is vital to the development of Standards and Programs. The CAATE appreciates the insights, suggestions, and recommendations of all who participate in the Open Comment.

These Standards are organized into the following categories:

Section I: Program Design and Quality

Section II: Program Delivery

Section III: Curricular Content

Section IV: Institutional Organization and Administration

Section V: Program Resources

Open Comment Process

The survey is designed so that you may comment on individual sections, or all sections as you see fit. The Commission received feedback on the structure of the Open Comment survey during the last open comment, and has revised the survey process to allow respondents to exit the surveys and return to edit responses until the time at which each survey section is submitted. There is a single survey link provided below, but respondents will be able to comment on each section individually. For the Operational Standards (Sections I, II, IV, and V) respondents are asked to respond to certain Standards specifically, but will also have the opportunity to provide feedback at the end of each section where they can comment on any Standard. Because of the significant revisions to Section III (Curricular Content), comment is requested for each Standard individually in that section. The open comment will remain open until July 31, 2017.

Stakeholder Feedback

Stakeholder feedback is vital to Standard development. The Commission encourages everyone to participate in this process. Feedback will be categorized and then reviewed by both the Commission and the Standards Committee to help refine the proposed Standards into their final form for approval. While all comments and suggestions are welcome, constructive feedback that provides suggestions for change or improvement, or specific comments relative to impact to programs and/or institutions are most helpful and provide the best means for refining the Standards.

Following this open comment period, the CAATE Standards Committee will complete one final round of edits to the proposed Standards and then will forward a final version to the Commission for approval. Once approved the operational Standards (sections I, II, IV, and V) will apply only to professional programs at the master’s degree level. However, the Curricular Content Standards (Section III) will apply to ALL professional programs and will replace the Athletic Training Educational Competencies, 5th ed. The specific date(s) of implementation will be determined based upon completion of the development of the final draft of the Standards, but will not occur before the 2019-2020 academic year.
