The CAATE Board of Commissioners approved a change to the CAATE Residency and Fellowship Program Standards. The changes provide clarification of Standards 14, 16, 18, 21 and an update to the glossary term of operational resources.
2022 Residency and Fellowship Standard Changes:
Standard 14-Revised the Standard
The program’s development, design, and delivery demonstrate ongoing and intentional systematic efforts in diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. efforts in its development, design and delivery.
Standard 16-Revised Glossary Term (changed operational resources to organizational resources)
There is an organizational structure with leadership and organizational resources to support the operations of the program.
Annotation: The intent of this standard is to ensure the operations for the residency program include organizational resources, legitimized practice settings, and organizational structure.

Standard 18- Revised the Standard
The program director is a full-time employee of the sponsoring organization. The program director’s experience and qualifications must include the following:
An earned post-baccalaureate degree
- Content expertise in the specialty area
- Certification and in good standing with the Board of Certification
- Current state athletic training credential and in good standing with the state regulatory agency in the state in which the program is housed (in states with regulation)
- Verified NPI number with appropriate healthcare field designation
- Engages in scholarship
- Engaged clinically within the specialty area
- Must be active at local, state, regional, and/or national levels
Standard 21-Revised the Standard
The core faculty experience and qualifications must include the following:
•An earned post-baccalaureate degree
• Content expertise in the specialty area
• Certification and in good standing with the Board of Certification
• Current state credential and in good standing with the state regulatory agency in the state in which the program is housed (in states with regulation
• Verified NPI number with appropriate healthcare field designation
• Engages in scholarship
• Currently practicing clinically in the specialty area
• Active at local, state, regional, and/or national levels
• Conducts essential orientation activities
