Residency and Fellowship Program Substantive Changes
Substantive Change includes any major change in the program. In order to maintain accreditation, the Program Director must inform CAATE of any substantive change such as the appointment of a new Program Director, a change in the Program format, etc. All substantive change documentation is now submitted within eAccreditation. The following categories for substantive change are available.
- Change of Program leadership where:
- Program Director is new faculty member/employee
- Existing Program Director takes leave of absence
- Existing faculty member/employee appointed as a permanent Program Director
- Relocation of program (change in department)
- Change in sponsoring organization accreditation status
- Change in program resources from the sponsoring organization
- Other
The documents required for each change are listed below in the appropriate category and can be uploaded to eAccreditation. Documentation will be reviewed. If additional information is requested, the program will have 30 days to respond.
Program Director Changes
Administrators are responsible for completing a substantive change request and uploading appropriate documentation within 30 days of anticipated or actual departure of the Athletic Training Program Director. Failure to do so will result in the program being placed on Administrative Probation. The CAATE Office will update the Program Director information in eAccreditation after review and acceptance of the appropriate materials. All other program administrators may be changed within eAccreditation by the Program Director by adding a user to the User tab and then selecting that user as an official on the Officials tab.
Instructions and documents to be completed for Program Director change are below. All documents will be uploaded to the substantive change tab in eAccreditation.
NEW FELLOWSHIP PROPOSAL
The CAATE accredits Fellowship programs in subspecialties when it can be demonstrated that the clinical care and safety of patients will be improved through accreditation of education and training in that subspecialty. Proposals must address the items below, providing justification for the new subspecialty area and demonstrating that there is a current need for Athletic Trainers with this subspecialty training. New fellowship proposals must be completed through eAccreditation’s Substantive Change tab informing the CAATE of the program’s request. Institution/organization administrator uploads a formal letter to the CAATE on institutional/organizational letterhead and all supporting documentation as outlined below in eAccreditation through the Substantive Change tab.
SUBSTANTIVE CHANGE: Program Transition from Residency to Fellowship or Fellowship to
Residency
The CAATE supports flexibility within accredited programs and identifies that there may be situations where a program may want to evolve toward developing subspecialists as the product of their curriculum. There may also be occurrences where programs that are developing subspecialists want to shift to developing specialists that align with the approved CAATE specialty areas. The process outlined below allows programs to develop along both directions on this spectrum from a residency to a fellowship as well as a fellowship to a residency.
